  • Fort Rodd Hill and Fisgard Lighthouse National Historic Sites
Fisgard Lighthouse is the oldest permanent lighthouse in BC sending out its first beam on November 16, 1860. Britain built Fort Rodd Hill in 1895, it came under Canadian command in 1906. When the fort was closed for active duty in 1956 the guns had never fired a shot. Fort Rodd Hill National Historic Park was opened in 1962. Walk along the ramparts of the gun batteries, explore underground magazines or discover camouflaged searchlight emplacements. Strange to find this among the beauty of groves of trees, sloping lawns and the pebble beach leading to Fisgard Island and the lighthouse. Great views of the Esquimalt Harbour, coastline, Strait, Olympic Mountains and Esquimalt Lagoon.
